Direct from the lab: Giles Meloche

When the Cleveland Barons merged with the Minnesota North Stars, we got Giles Meloche. He was a joy to watch — arguably the best all time North Stars goaltender. This one is done with india ink, watercolor ink and rub on comic pattern.

Here’s a rendition of former Minnesota North Star great Don Beaupre wearing his trademark white Cooper SK 600 helmet. When I was a kid I always wondered why Beaupre was the only one on the ice wearing a white helmet with the green away uniforms. Nobody seemed to have an answer for this and I never figured it out……

We like to remember Gump Worsley as the symbol of Minnesota North Star goaltending. But really, Gump was in the twilight of his career when with the Stars. He was actually talked out of retirement to join the team and support younger goaltender Cesare Maniago. With Maniago doing the lion’s share of goaltending, the duo helped the Stars have a few good seasons in the early seventies….

Maniago played for the North Stars from 1967 to 1976, then finished his career in Vancouver with the Canucks.
